Amidst the festive season of Christmas and New Year, India is grappling with a concerning surge in Covid-19 cases, marking a stark contrast to the joyous celebrations.
Over the last 24 hours, the nation has reported a distressing spike with 614 fresh cases, the highest since May 21 of the current year. This surge is attributed to the newly identified JN.1 variant, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing battle against the pandemic.
According to official records from the Union Health Ministry, the tally of active cases has reached 2,311.
Disturbingly, recent reports highlight a significant escalation in India's active Covid-19 cases, witnessing a doubling within a mere nine days. Starting from 938 on December 11, the active cases tally surged to 1,970 by December 19, underscoring the rapidity of the virus's spread.
In Karnataka, the situation is particularly grim, with Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao confirming two fatalities due to Covid-19. One individual succumbed to the virus at Jayadeva Hospital, while another person lost his life at Aster Hospital.
Minister Rao, expressing concern, has initiated discussions on implementing measures to curb the virus's further spread, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to mitigate the escalating crisis.
