India is set to take a major stride in high-speed rail development, with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) preparing to manufacture the country's first bullet train prototype at its Bengaluru plant by September 2025. This facility, already engaged in producing Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, will now be at the forefront of India’s bullet train ambitions.

BEML has been awarded a contract to design, manufacture, and commission two high-speed trainsets, each comprising eight coaches and capable of reaching speeds up to 280 kmph. While operational speeds are expected to be capped at 249 kmph, full-speed trials are slated for December 2026.
Currently in the design phase, the project marks a significant technological leap. It incorporates advanced systems for passenger safety, welding, signalling, and train control. The company expects the first coach to be ready by the end of FY26, following which it will undergo rigorous testing, including squeeze and climatic chamber tests to assess structural integrity and climate resilience.
The Rs 866.87 crore project translates to approximately Rs 27.86 crore per coach—considerably more economical than Japan’s Shinkansen models. BEML attributes this cost efficiency to the use of indigenous materials, including locally produced stainless steel.
Once the prototype passes its initial testing, BEML plans to proceed with mass production. Speed and oscillation trials will take place directly on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, positioning India closer to realising its high-speed rail vision.
