The country’s fertility rate has seen a significant decline over the decades. In 1950, the average number of children born to a woman was 6.18. However, a study published in The Lancet revealed that this number dropped to 1.91 in 2021. Projections suggest a further decline, with the fertility rate potentially falling to 1.3 by 2050 and 1.04 by 2100.

This sharp decline has led to the rapid expansion of IVF centers, even in Tier-II cities. Increased awareness about reproductive health and fertility issues has driven many childless couples to seek help from private clinics offering these services.

The total fertility rate (TFR), which measures the average number of children a woman is expected to have during her lifetime, is a critical demographic indicator. A TFR of 2.1 is necessary to maintain a stable population. Falling below this replacement level signals a shrinking population, a trend India is currently experiencing.

As India’s fertility rate continues to drop, the demand for IVF services is expected to rise, highlighting the need to address fertility issues and enhance reproductive health awareness to support couples in their journey towards parenthood.
