Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP, is at the helm of a high-level delegation representing India in an international campaign to counter terrorism. Departing from Delhi early Saturday, Tharoor stressed that India’s voice will not be stifled by acts of terror, reiterating a clear and unwavering stance against violent extremism.
This diplomatic mission, framed as one of “hope and unity,” will tour Guyana, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and the United States. Its purpose is to rally global support for India’s position and spotlight Pakistan’s alleged involvement in cross-border terrorism. The delegation aims to foster dialogue with foreign governments, thought leaders, legislators, and Indian communities abroad, projecting a cohesive Indian stance.
In a video message posted online, Tharoor called for international solidarity with India’s battle against terrorism, highlighting the country’s commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights. Stressing that the initiative transcends partisan politics, he emphasized a collective national effort to combat terror in all forms.
Prior to departure, the group was briefed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who provided detailed evidence of Pakistan-backed groups’ involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack and explained India’s recent military retaliation, Operation Sindoor.
Joining Tharoor are parliamentarians from multiple political parties, including Tejasvi Surya, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Shambhavi Choudhary, GM Harish Balayogi, Milind Deora, Sarfaraz Ahmad, and Taranjit Singh Sandhu, former Indian envoy to the U.S. Their journey begins with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial in New York, a powerful gesture to underline India’s shared experiences with terrorism. This will be followed by participation in Guyana’s Independence Day celebrations and further diplomatic discussions in the region.
Despite some internal disagreement within the Congress party regarding Tharoor’s appointment to lead this effort, a decision taken by the Modi government, the delegation presents a united face. Visuals from the airport show Tharoor engaging amicably with BJP’s Tejasvi Surya, underscoring the bipartisan nature of this mission.
Tharoor insisted that the focus must remain on the broader goal: ensuring India’s firm stance against terrorism is heard loud and clear around the world.
