‘The Indrani Mukerjea story: Buried truth’ released on Netflix 6 days after its originally scheduled release on 29th February. The delay was caused by the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea to the Bombay High Court for a stay order on the release stating that the agency has depicted in a prejudiced manner and that the witnesses could potentially be influenced hence having a bearing on the trial. The High Court however dismissed the petition. “Whatever she has said, everything is in the public domain. Honestly, we have not found anything that goes against the prosecution. We felt you had a genuine apprehension and, therefore, gave you the opportunity to view the series and did not let the other party argue that day. You cannot presume the accused to be guilty. Tell us which witness has spoken which is contrary to the prosecution? In fact, it is favouring the prosecution. Public perceptions can be influenced by newspapers and everything. But the judiciary does not get affected by all this. We only go by evidence and what is produced before us,” the bench observed.

The series has gotten mixed reviews with some portions of the audience criticising Netflix for providing a platform for a potential murderer. Accusations of whitewashing Indrani’s image are being made. The docu-series however remains earnest in the portrayal of the characters in the aftermath of the arrests without necessarily drawing conclusions not foregrounded in circumstance but at the same time also not hesitating from asking the tough questions to those related to the case.

The docu-series is based on the murder of Sheena Bora which came to the limelight in 2015, three years after it was supposedly committed.
