As the IPL fever intensifies, so do the number of online ticket scams targeting eager cricket fans.  A recent incident in Chennai saw a Bengaluru woman fall victim to one such scam, leaving her and six others stranded outside the Chepauk Stadium before the RCB vs CSK match on 28 March.

The woman had connected with a person on Facebook who claimed to be a volunteer at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, offering tickets for sale. After agreeing on seven tickets, the scammer demanded a 10% advance, which the woman paid. However, when he insisted on full payment before delivery, she refused, stating she would pay the balance only upon receiving the tickets in person.

Despite her caution, the scammer persisted, pushing for the entire amount. Upon reaching the stadium around 1 pm, the woman and others found themselves without tickets, as the scammer failed to show up. Despite pleading with him, she received no response and was left disappointed after paying ₹3,500.

Cricket analyst Karthik Kannan shared the incident on social media, calling for a tech-driven solution to prevent such frauds. Fans echoed his concerns, highlighting the rise in scams at Chepauk, particularly after the pandemic.

Many urged the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to act swiftly to curb such fraudulent activities. The incident serves as a cautionary tale, with experts advising fans to purchase tickets only from trusted sources.
