Amid rising tensions and ongoing conflict with Israel, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has discreetly outlined a succession plan by identifying three senior clerics as possible candidates to assume leadership after his death. This rare and strategic move comes at a time when the nation faces both external threats and internal uncertainty, highlighting the leadership’s intent to maintain political continuity.

Iran’s process for choosing a new Supreme Leader lies with the Assembly of Experts, a powerful 88-member religious council. This mechanism has been activated only once in the country’s history, making the current developments particularly significant. Khamenei, now in his mid-80s and in power since 1989, appears to be pushing for a prepared and stable transition, especially with the country currently in the midst of armed conflict.
Among the figures not being considered is Khamenei’s own son, Mojtaba Khamenei. Despite years of speculation and his strong ties to powerful military factions, he has reportedly been excluded to avoid the impression of a hereditary power shift. Another expected contender, former President Ebrahim Raisi, is no longer in the picture following his death in a helicopter crash in 2024.
While the specific names of the selected clerics remain undisclosed, their inclusion reflects a desire for religious credibility, political loyalty, and alignment with Iran’s revolutionary ideals.
Khamenei has remained secluded and cautious, issuing minimal public communication while tensions continue to rise. Behind the scenes, however, a critical shift in Iran’s leadership structure is already in motion.
