Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s remarks in an event organised by the far-right ultra-conservative Brothers of Italy Party have become a source of controversy. In a video that has now gone viral, she can be heard saying, “I think there is a problem of compatibility between Islamic culture or a certain interpretation of Islamic culture and the rights and values of our civilization. It does not escape my mind that most of the Islamic cultural centres in Italy are financed by Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is a nation that at home applies Sharia. And Sharia means lapidation for adultery, death penalty for apostasy and death penalty for homosexuality. I believe that these issues must be raised, which does not mean generalising on Islam. It means that there is a process of Islamisation of Europe that is very distant from the values of our civilisation.”

This event was attended by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak and the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla Elon Musk. Sunak’s views on migration mirror that of Meloni. Rishi emphasised on containing the problem in order to direct resources towards those who are in most need of it. He claimed that this would need a break from consensus.
