On Wednesday, Israeli television aired previously withheld footage showing five female army conscripts in pyjamas being seized by Hamas gunmen during the October 7 raid that sparked the Gaza war. The footage aims to increase pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a truce with Hamas and secure the hostages’ release.

The three-minute subtitled clip, released to national and international media, shows the young women, some bloodied and all stunned, being bound and bundled into a jeep.

“These girls are still in the captivity of Hamas. Please don’t look away,” government spokesperson David Mencer urged reporters. “Watch the film. Support Israel in bringing our people home.”

In the footage, 19-year-old conscript Naama Levy pleads in English, “I have friends in Palestine,” to which a gunman responds in Arabic, “You are dogs! We will step on you, dogs!”

The Hostages Families Forum, representing relatives of the 124 people still held by Hamas, said the footage was recovered from bodycams worn by the gunmen who attacked the Nahal Oz base in southern Israel. The publication was approved by the families of the five captives. “The Israeli government must not waste another moment; it must return to the negotiating table today!”, the Forum urged.

Israel claims 1,200 people were killed and over 250 abducted in the October 7 attack. In response, Israel launched an offensive against Hamas, resulting in over 35,000 Palestinian deaths according to Gaza health authorities. Israel’s military reports 286 Israeli soldiers killed.

Netanyahu’s government insists that continued military pressure will force Hamas to yield. Hostage families, fearing for their loved ones’ lives, urge immediate action. Orly Gilboa, mother of hostage Daniela, pleaded, “They suffer there every minute, every second. And every minute is important.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry plans to show the footage to the ambassadors of Ireland, Norway, and Spain, summoned to protest their governments’ preparations to recognize a Palestinian state.
