Italian daily Il Foglio has claimed a world first by publishing an entire edition generated solely by artificial intelligence. The four-page Il Foglio AI, released on Tuesday, is part of a month-long experiment exploring AI’s impact on journalism, according to editor Claudio Cerasa.

The AI-driven edition was included as a supplement in the newspaper’s traditional print format and made available online. Every element—from news articles and headlines to summaries and even humorous commentary—was generated by AI, with human journalists merely inputting queries and reviewing responses.
“It will be the first daily newspaper in the world on newsstands created entirely using artificial intelligence,” Cerasa was quoted by The Guardian.
The front page featured an analysis of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s influence in Italy, critiquing Italian conservatives for opposing “cancel culture” while overlooking Trump's authoritarian tendencies. Another article, titled “Putin, the 10 Betrayals,” examined two decades of broken promises by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a rare positive economic story, the AI edition reported that income tax reforms had led to salary increases for 750,000 Italian workers, citing data from Istat, Italy’s national statistics agency.
While the AI-generated articles were clear and structured, Il Foglio AI notably lacked direct human quotes, raising fresh questions about AI’s role in news reporting.
