  • Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) starting July 1
  • Aims to bolster road safety and enforce traffic regulations more effectively
  • Plans are underway to integrate the challan system with Fastag

Karnataka is set to introduce a groundbreaking Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, starting July 1 i.e. tomorrow. This innovative initiative aims to bolster road safety and enforce traffic regulations more effectively. The expressway will soon feature advanced cameras capable of promptly detecting traffic violations.

Extensive Monitoring Equipment

To ensure rigorous monitoring, the Karnataka Police will install cameras and speed guns along the expressway. Already, 155 laser speed guns and 800 alcometers have been deployed across the state to combat drunk driving.

Strategic Expansion

The ITMS was initially introduced in Bengaluru in 2022, featuring 250 automatic number plate recognition cameras and 80 red light detection cameras at 50 key junctions in Mysuru. This expansion cost approximately Rs. 8.5 crore, with Rs. 4 crore allocated for Mysuru city and Rs. 4.5 crore for the district.

Real-Time Alerts and Monitoring

A notable feature of the new system is real-time SMS alerts to traffic violators, notifying them of their offenses. The installation of a traffic management center in Mysuru emphasizes that traffic violators will receive instant SMS alerts. ITMS will also be implemented on all highways linking Bengaluru, with government tenders to be issued in July for this project.

Integration with Fastag

To streamline fine collection, discussions are underway to integrate the challan system with Fastag at toll gates. This integration would allow fines to be deducted directly from the Fastag wallet, providing a more efficient and convenient payment mechanism. Reportedly plans are underway to seek approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for this integration, further enhancing traffic management on the expressway.

This new system marks a significant step forward in improving road safety and traffic regulation enforcement in Karnataka.
