The Jammu and Kashmir police have stated that there has been a 91% reduction in terrorism over the last year. “I'm so happy that youth of Kashmir has understood tricks and conspiracies of the enemy. From 110 youth who joined militancy last year, only 10 have joined militancy this year (SIC),” Dilbag Singh, Director General of J&K police said as per a report in the NDTV.
This has been the lowest recorded number in the region in the last 34 years. “I wish even these 10 had not gone to the other side. It would been so nice and we would have told the world that all the youth of J&K are on the side of peace,” Dilbagh Singh added.
The already militarised region witnessed an even further allotment of military resources in 2019 ever since the abrogation of Section 370 that had accorded special rights with respect to land for people in the region. In 2019, 119 individuals were drawn to terrorism in the region. In 2020 the number increased to 167. In 2021, 128 terrorists were observed. In 2022, 110 people were recruited by terrorist organisations. The reduction in terrorism would facilitate in conducting the elections in the region which has seen constant delays ever since the PDP-BJP alliance dissolved in 2018 resulting in the governor’s rule.
