A former Japanese entrepreneur who once ran a chain of 15 beauty product stores in Tokyo has transformed into a Hindu monk after a life-altering spiritual encounter in India. Now known as Bala Kumbha Gurumuni, 41-year-old Hoshi Takayuki left behind his business empire and adopted a life of devotion, walking barefoot among saffron-clad pilgrims during this year’s Kanwar Yatra.

The transformation began nearly two decades ago during a visit to Tamil Nadu, where Takayuki discovered Nadi Shastra — an ancient palm-leaf astrology system practiced by Siddha sages. Unlike traditional birth chart readings, Nadi readings are matched through thumbprints and are believed to contain details of one’s past, present, and future.

Takayuki’s reading revealed a connection to the Himalayas and a past life as a sage. The revelations profoundly impacted him, deepening his belief in reincarnation and spiritual destiny. Returning to Japan, he experienced vivid dreams reinforcing his Himalayan connection, which led him to renounce his corporate identity and fully embrace Hindu spirituality.

He handed over his business to trusted followers, converted his Tokyo home into a Shiva temple, and later built a public shrine for worship. Today, he leads a group of 20 Japanese disciples, promoting spiritual awakening through Indian traditions.
