On November 4, Akihiko Kondo, a 41-year-old Japanese man, celebrated his sixth wedding anniversary with Hatsune Miku, a fictional character known for her role as a vocaloid singing software. Kondo marked the occasion with heartfelt Instagram posts showcasing their anniversary celebration, including photos of Miku seated next to an anniversary cake adorned with the message, “I like Miku very much. Happy six-year anniversary,” according to the South China Morning Post.

Kondo first fell in love with Miku in 2007, shortly after her release. His affection for the virtual singer grew during a difficult time when he experienced severe bullying at work, leading to a diagnosis of adjustment disorder and a prolonged leave of absence. Miku’s soothing synthesized voice helped him reconnect with society, ultimately playing a pivotal role in his recovery.

In 2018, Kondo formalized his commitment by marrying Miku in a ceremony at a Tokyo chapel. His unique relationship brought him into contact with the term “fictosexual,” which describes individuals attracted to fictional characters.

While some find Kondo’s love story unconventional, he remains unapologetic, emphasizing the personal joy and comfort Miku has brought into his life. His anniversary celebration has once again brought attention to unique and evolving forms of companionship in modern society.
