Japan’s MODERATO (management of origin-destination related adaptation for traffic optimization) would be put to use in 28 junctions across the Bengaluru city and it is estimated that this would result in a 30% reduction in the waiting line and increase commute speed by 13 kilometers per hour.
MODERATO is an integral traffic control system, that is to say that this system achieves optimal traffic management by providing information via various audio visual cues and controlling signals based on the outcome of the analysis of data collected by detectors located at key points on the junctions. MODERATO adjusts the duration of the red and green light based on the density of traffic.
Old Madras Road, MG Road and Hosur Road are among the locations which would put this technology into use by the end of September 2023. The project was initiated in the year 2014. The traffic congestion issues have since then developed in the Outer Ring Road and other regions in the outskirts of the city. But this project was already in advanced stages and a change of plan was not on the cards. The project has cost an estimated amount of close to Rs 70 crore and a Japan based firm, Nagoya Electric Works Corporation limited was responsible for its implementation.
