Alia Bhatt’s latest film Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala, is facing significant challenges both at the box office and off-screen. The film, co-produced by Bhatt alongside Karan Johar under Dharma Productions, has failed to make a significant impact, with a disappointing opening and ongoing controversies.
Jigra, reportedly made on a budget of Rs 80 crore, with an additional Rs 10 crore for publicity, has so far failed to recover its investment through theatrical earnings. Despite the lackluster performance, a source cited by Bollywood Hungama claims that Dharma Productions has recouped its budget through the sale of digital and satellite rights. The film’s box office returns are expected to add only marginal profits.

Alia Bhatt’s fee, according to Republic World, is estimated between Rs 10 to 15 crore, reflecting her status as one of Bollywood’s top stars. Despite this, the film's poor opening—grossing just Rs 4.25 crore on day one—marks one of the weakest debuts for an Alia Bhatt-led film in the last decade. After five days, domestic earnings have totaled only Rs 19.35 crore.
Adding to its woes, Jigra faces accusations of plagiarism, with critics drawing parallels between its plot and Divya Khosla Kumar’s Savi. Both films center on a familial rescue mission from prison, fueling allegations of plot similarities.
Despite the ongoing controversies, Jigra tells the emotional story of Satya, played by Bhatt, as she fights to save her brother from wrongful conviction and death row.
