Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to terminate its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Turkey's Inonu University, citing "national security" concerns. The decision came amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly after Turkey expressed support for Pakistan. JNU announced the suspension of the agreement, which had been in place since February 3, 2025, and was supposed to last until February 2028. The university emphasized its alignment with national interests through a post on X, reaffirming its commitment to the country's security.
Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Türkiye stands suspended until further notice.

This action followed a broader context of escalating Indo-Turkish tensions, marked by Turkey's backing of Pakistan, especially after India's Operation Sindoor, a military operation targeting terror camps in Pakistan in response to a deadly attack on Indian civilians. Additionally, reports surfaced about the use of Turkish-origin drones by Pakistan in its military operations against India. On the same day, the Indian government briefly blocked the Twitter accounts of Turkish news network TRT World, accusing it of spreading misinformation and propaganda against India.
In response to the situation, public sentiment in India has shifted, with calls for boycotting Turkish goods, apples, electronic goods, marble and services gaining momentum. Moreover, India's trade relations with Turkey are likely to face difficulties due to Ankara's stance on supporting Pakistan. The ongoing diplomatic friction has affected tourism as well. Indian travel booking platforms such as MakeMyTrip and EaseMyTrip have reported a significant decline in bookings to Turkey and Azerbaijan. While the platforms still allow bookings, they have advised against non-essential travel to these countries and discontinued promotions.
