The promotional event, also attended by Sandalwood star Shivarajkumar, took a tense turn when Haasan made the contentious linguistic claim. Kannada activist Praveen Shetty of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike criticized Haasan for making such a statement in front of Shivarajkumar, who he said had shown the veteran actor great respect in the past. “When Kamal was struggling, it was our Kannada industry that extended support. Today, he mocks us,” Shetty said, demanding a public apology.

The Kannada Sahitya Parishad and various pro-Kannada organizations have also condemned the statement. Threats of a statewide protest have surfaced, with many vowing to block the release of Thug Life in Karnataka unless Haasan retracts his comments.

Dr. N.R. Ramesh, honorary president of the Rajkumar Fans’ Association, warned of a major protest on June 5 if Haasan fails to clarify his remarks. While acknowledging Haasan’s praise for icons Dr. Rajkumar and Shivarajkumar, Ramesh said speaking about Kannada without historical knowledge reflects “Tamil prejudice.”
