The Karnataka High Court on Monday asked veteran actor Kamal Haasan to tender an apology before it considers his appeal related to the release of his upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka. The court took exception to his recent remarks claiming that Kannada was “born out of Tamil,” sparking widespread outrage across Karnataka.

During the hearing, Justice M. Nagaprasanna expressed his disappointment, stating, “I too wanted to watch the movie. But you are responsible for the present situation.” The court said Haasan, as a public figure, should act with greater responsibility and sensitivity.
“You can’t hurt the feelings of Kannadigas. Are you a historian to make such statements?” the judge asked. He emphasized that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, it does not give anyone the right to make statements that offend public sentiment.
“People of Karnataka, for them, language is an emotion,” the court observed, pointing out that linguistic pride runs deep in the state. The judge said such comments can disrupt communal harmony and that actors and public figures must be cautious with their words.
The court made it clear that unless Haasan issues an unconditional public apology, it would not take up the appeal seeking clearance for Thug Life’s release in Karnataka.
