Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has been elected as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) from the Mandi constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Her passion for films has apparently still not died down. In one of her recent Instagram stories, she paid tribute to the Late Bollywood actress Meena Kumari. “I haven’t followed much of Meena ji’s work but I read a lot and she seemed highly celebrated for her craft. This hair-raising transition from grief to hysterical chuckle to sheer disillusionment is beyond supreme. Apparently in her days one didn’t dare call other heroines actresses, media and film industry said they are all heroines, there is one actress and that is Meena Kumari,” Kangana’s story mentioned. Kangana shared a still from her iconic film ‘Pakeezah’ in her story.

Meena Kumari was renowned for her expressive performance in tragedies. The film ‘Pakeezah’ has entered the Bollywood discourse in June as Meena Kumari’s stepson Tajdar Amrohi disagreed with a remark made by actress Sharmin Segal stating that her performance in the Netflix show ‘Heeramandi’ was inspired by Meena Kumari’s performance in ‘Pakeezah.’ After being criticised for not being emotive throughout the series, Sharmin remarked that she was inspired by the ‘nothingness’ brought to the screen by Meena Kumari in ‘Pakeezah.
