Comedian Kapil Sharma’s newly launched cafe in Canada came under attack late Wednesday night after unidentified assailants fired multiple rounds at the premises. The incident occurred just days after the soft launch of Kap's Cafe, marking Sharma's debut in the hospitality sector alongside his wife, Ginni Chatrath.
Security footage from the scene reveals a man firing at least nine rounds at the cafe's front window from a parked vehicle before fleeing. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The shooting has been linked to Khalistani terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi, who has reportedly claimed responsibility. Laddi, associated with the banned group Babbar Khalsa International, is on the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) most-wanted list in India. He is also accused of orchestrating the killing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Vikas Prabhakar in Punjab earlier this year.
Canadian authorities have cordoned off the site, and forensic teams are conducting investigations. The motive appears to stem from remarks allegedly made by Sharma that offended Laddi.
This incident reignites long-standing concerns about the presence of Khalistani elements operating from Canadian soil. Canada's intelligence agency recently acknowledged that extremist groups continue to use the country as a base for promoting violence against India.
Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada had escalated in 2023 but have shown signs of improvement under current Prime Minister Mark Carney’s leadership, following efforts to stabilize bilateral relations.
