Large parts of Karnataka have been recipients of copious amounts of rainfall. This has resulted in tragedy in the Karavali region.
A hill collapsed in the Shiroor village located in the Ankola Taluk of the Uttara Kannada district. This has had disastrous consequences as 7 people, including 5 people from the same family died. The bodies of hotel owner Lakshman Naik, his wife Shanti Naik, 11-year-old Roshan and a lorry driver have been recovered. 5 dead bodies have been recovered thus far. All the dead bodies are from the Gokarna region. The possibility of the death toll increasing is being taken into consideration. More than 10 people are speculated to have died due to the collapse.
Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mankal Vaidya from the Indian National Congress (INC) visited the location and took stock of the rescue operations which are underway. He also listened to the grievances of the localities. “10 to 12 people may be stuck. We have confirmed information of 6 people being stuck. The full picture will become clear only once the rescue operations come to an end,” he said.
A tea stall is believed to have been located at the spot of the tragedy. 2 people from houses close to the tea stall are missing.
