In a unique move to improve attendance in the Karnataka Assembly, Speaker UT Khader has proposed renting recliners to help legislators stay refreshed, particularly during long post-lunch sessions. This initiative aims to ensure that lawmakers remain engaged and active throughout the Assembly proceedings.

As part of the plan, 15 recliners will be placed in both the ruling and opposition party lounges ahead of the Budget Session on March 3. Instead of purchasing them, the Secretariat will rent the recliners, as Assembly sessions are held only for about three months each year.

Khader, a seasoned legislator and former minister, has introduced several measures to enhance participation. Last year, he implemented AI-enabled cameras to monitor MLAs' presence and engagement, ensuring accountability. Additionally, he introduced complimentary meals within the Assembly premises, reducing the need for legislators to step out and improving overall attendance.

His efforts come in response to the increasing duration of Assembly sessions, some of which extend beyond midnight. On December 17, 2024, the Karnataka Assembly set a record with a 15-hour session, running from 10 am past midnight.

With long sessions demanding greater stamina from lawmakers, Khader’s latest initiative aims to create a more comfortable and productive legislative environment while reinforcing attendance and participation.
