The Karnataka government has pledged complete security for the release of Kamal Haasan’s Tamil film Thug Life across the state, following a directive from the Supreme Court, which cleared the film for screening despite rising controversy and public objections.

In an affidavit submitted to the apex court, the state confirmed it would ensure protection for cinema halls exhibiting the film and safeguard the interests of moviegoers. The assurance came after the Supreme Court bench of Justices Manmohan and J. Bhuyan firmly stated that public threats or fear of unrest cannot override the rule of law. The court emphasized that artistic works cannot be blocked on the basis of hypothetical violence or intimidation.
The court's strong stand came in response to concerns that groups were threatening to disrupt screenings of Thug Life in Karnataka, even going as far as warning about burning theatres. The Supreme Court clarified that such threats cannot be used as grounds to deny a lawful release and stressed that ensuring law and order is the responsibility of the state.
While no official ban has been imposed on the movie, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce has demanded an apology from Kamal Haasan over certain controversial remarks. Initially, the producers had submitted to the High Court that they would not release the film in Karnataka. However, they have now indicated their willingness to engage in discussions with the Chamber to peacefully resolve the issue.
The Supreme Court has also transferred all related petitions from the High Court to itself for further hearing.
