The southwest monsoon is set to make an early entry into Karnataka, with the state meteorological department predicting its arrival today, covering most parts of the state, including Bengaluru. This year, the monsoon has also arrived early in Kerala and coastal Karnataka, raising hopes for a season of good rainfall.

According to the weather department, this early arrival is reminiscent of 16 years ago when the monsoon entered the region on May 14. This year’s pre-monsoon rainfall has already been promising, creating favorable conditions for an early and active monsoon season.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned residents of the Malnad and Western Ghats regions, warning of a higher risk of landslides due to heavy and continuous rains. These regions are known for their steep terrains and dense forests, making them vulnerable to soil erosion and landslides during intense downpours. Tourists and locals are urged to exercise caution and avoid risky areas during the season.
Farmers and water resource managers are hopeful that this year’s monsoon will bring sufficient rainfall to support agriculture and replenish water bodies. The meteorological office has also advised the public to stay updated on local weather alerts and heed safety warnings, especially in vulnerable areas.
The early monsoon is expected to bring much-needed respite from the heat and support vital agricultural activities. However, with increased rainfall comes the responsibility of being vigilant and prepared for potential hazards, particularly in sensitive regions like the Western Ghats.
