  • Consumers charged until 15th July by BESCOM
  • Minister KJ George upset with BESCOM
  • BESCOM says the bills were charged between June 15th-July15th

The Karnataka government implemented its ambitious Gruha Jyoti scheme for its people starting July 1st.

However, it has run into a controversy.

As per reports, many consumers have received bills for the first half of July. as the scheme is already in practice since July 1st, they can’t be billed for the same month.

Energy minister KJ George is reportedly upset over the matter. He sought an explanation from the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) officials concerned.

"We have assured the public and we cannot go back on that. You (BESCOM) can only charge the public until June 30 and not a day beyond that deadline. When the government announced free power up to 200 units from July 1, why are you charging citizens from July 1 to July 15?" he was quoted by Times Now.

On their part, the officials said they are only following the routine billing cycle, which is 15th to 15th.

What is the Gruha Jyoti scheme?

The scheme gives a waiver of usage-fee for as many as 200 units. Anything beyond this point is liable to be charged. It is one of the guarantees promised by the Siddaramiah-led government. People can make use of the scheme by furnishing relevant details and documents.
