Karnataka’s food safety authorities have launched a statewide crackdown on eateries using plastic sheets in idli preparation, citing serious health risks. Following an order issued on February 14, 2025, by the Commissionerate of Food Safety and Drug Administration, officials have inspected 254 establishments, issuing notices to 24.

The move comes amid public complaints regarding plastic use in cooking. Experts warn that exposing plastic to high temperatures can release harmful chemicals, including bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which may cause hormonal imbalances, developmental disorders, and an increased risk of cancers.
City hoteliers acknowledge that plastic sheets were once used for convenience and cost-cutting but claim the practice is fading. Many now prefer traditional methods such as banana leaves, cotton cloth, or non-stick moulds.
Bruhat Bangalore Hotel Association and hotel owners reportedly said that while some small eateries may still use plastic, most have switched to non-stick moulds or cloth and they even rely on banana leaves and cotton cloths, ensuring food safety and hygiene.
Authorities continue to monitor compliance, urging eateries to eliminate plastic use in food preparation for public health safety.
