The Karnataka government has declared December 11, 2024, a public holiday to honour the late former Chief Minister SM Krishna, who passed away at 92. Government offices, schools, colleges, and aided institutions across the state will remain closed on Wednesday.

A three-day mourning period, from December 10 to 12, has been announced. During this time, all public entertainment programs are banned, and the national flag will fly at half-mast on state government buildings.

SM Krishna, a veteran politician credited with propelling Bengaluru to global recognition as India’s Silicon Valley, died early on Tuesday, December 10, at 2:45 AM. His cremation, with full state honours, will take place in his hometown, Mandya, on Wednesday.

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Krishna had a distinguished political career spanning decades. He served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 and held several key positions, including Governor of Maharashtra and Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. His contributions to India’s IT sector and public infrastructure remain monumental.

In recognition of his service, Krishna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2023.

An official statement said, "The state mourns the loss of a visionary leader who transformed Bengaluru and Karnataka. His contributions will be remembered for generations."

Citizens and leaders alike have expressed their condolences, highlighting his legacy as a transformative figure in Indian politics.
