  • Karnataka to install AI cameras in all district centers for automated traffic enforcement
  • Violations will be captured via ANPR technology and fines sent directly to violators
  • Initiative aims to improve road safety and reduce human-police conflicts

In a groundbreaking move aimed at transforming traffic management, the Karnataka Police Department has announced the deployment of AI-based cameras across all district centers. This initiative, inspired by the successful Bengaluru model, will see the integration of cutting-edge Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) technology throughout the state.

The decision comes in the wake of growing concerns over traffic rule violations and the need for a more efficient enforcement system. AI-powered cameras equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology will be installed at key junctions, major roads, and prominent city centers. These cameras will identify traffic violations, including helmetless riding, signal jumps, speeding, mobile phone usage while driving, and non-compliance with seat belt rules.

Once a violation is detected, the system will automatically capture the vehicle’s registration number along with photographic evidence. This data will be sent to a centralized control room, and fines will be directly sent to the violator's registered mobile number or address. This eliminates the need for physical police intervention, reducing potential conflicts between motorists and law enforcement.

The move comes after a tragic incident in Mandya, where a three-year-old lost their life, highlighting the urgent need for safer roads. The police department, under the leadership of DGP MA Saleem, is determined to enhance road safety and efficiency while reducing manual intervention and potential misuse of power by officers. This expansion marks the first time the ITMS system, previously limited to Bengaluru, will cover all district centers, including major cities, towns, and junctions.

The department plans to complete the installation of AI cameras across all districts soon. This technological leap will not only enhance traffic law enforcement but also help create a more accountable and transparent system for managing Karnataka’s growing traffic concerns.
