Karnataka govt to execute animal birth control (ABC) programs for stray dogs

Government mandates local bodies to establish a four-member committee

Committee to give Rs 5,000 for dog bite injuries and Rs 5 lakh for fatalities

The Karnataka state government has directed municipalities, taluk panchayats, and city corporations to execute animal birth control (ABC) program for stray dogs, in line with the initiatives of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Moreover, the government has made it mandatory for these local bodies to establish a four-member committee to evaluate applications from individuals who have suffered dog bites, offering financial aid as necessary.

On October 30, the Under Secretary of the Urban Development Department issued a directive regarding this matter.

According to the order issued by Satish Kabade, the Under Secretary of the Urban Development Department, “The committee established at the taluk, municipality, and city corporation levels must convene within 48 hours of receiving the report from the medical superintendent to review the applications filed by victims of dog bites. The committee should arrange for a financial grant of Rs 5,000 for injuries resulting from dog bites and Rs 5 lakh in case of fatalities caused by dog bites.”

The responsibilities of these committees include validating the applications of dog bite victims, arranging for medical treatment, obtaining a non-cognizable report from the local police station, and making arrangements for treatment at private hospitals if government facilities are not accessible.

Animal advocates have greeted the government’s decree on compensating dog bite victims and implementing the ABC program for stray dogs.
