Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre orders vaccination of wild cats in all zoos

Officials directed to be on high alert and take precautionary measures

Officials asked to ensure supply of medical equipment for animals, staff

The Karnataka Forest Minister, Eshwar Khandre, has issued an order for the vaccination of wild cats in all zoos. This decision comes in the wake of recent animal deaths at Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), where seven leopard cubs and 16 deer have tragically perished in the past few days.

During his visit to BBP on September 21 to assess the situation, Minister Khandre directed officials to maintain a state of high alert and implement precautionary measures across all zoos to prevent the potential transmission of infections among animals, particularly the wild cat species.

Although there have been no new reported cases of Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV) infection at BBP, Minister Khandre emphasized the importance of exercising caution.

To safeguard the health of leopards, lions, tigers, and other wild cats housed not only at BBP but also at Mysuru zoo and all other zoos throughout Karnataka, Minister Khandre mandated their vaccination against FPV.

Furthermore, he instructed BBP staff members not to get in touch with employees from other zoos, given the recent surge in reported cases. He also advised against visits to other zoos.

During a meeting held on the zoo premises with BBP and forest department officials, Minister Khandre engaged in an in-depth discussion with the staff to assess the current situation.

He stressed the need for ensuring an adequate supply of medical equipment for both the animals and the staff. Additionally, he also emphasized the importance of conducting thorough and regular medical examinations of all animals to prevent any potential spread of infection.
