The Karnataka government is considering a ban on crackers for Diwali this year in light of the accident in a factory in Attibele that resulted in 16 deaths.
Home Minister of Karnataka, Parameshwara stated that every year during Deepavali such fire incidents happen. He made a passing reference of another fire cracker accident that occurred in Tamil Nadu wherein 12 people died. He stated that the government would bring into action a new set of laws in the coming days to ensure that such incidents don’t occur and to regulate things. This is currently in the discussion phase. He remarked that this accident has been a wake up call of sorts to the state. Amendments to existing law are also being mulled over.
Parameshwara pointed out the various drawbacks to the bursting of firecrackers. He pointed out the loss of innocent lives, the loss of visions and other detrimental outcomes. He highlighted that in Delhi, bursting of crackers during the Deepavali festival is banned. He contemplated reproducing the ban in the state of Karnataka. He acknowledged that the modus operandi of bringing this into action and technicalities involved in it remain to be mulled over. He mentioned the Chief Minister has to be taken into confidence for this and that role of the Central government should also be understood.
