Karnataka government looks to build Information Disorder Tackling Unit

The Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS) has published an Expression of Interest form looking for agencies that take on the role for the fact check, capacity building and analytics team of the  Information Disorder Tackling Unit (IDTU). 

The form stated that the Fact Check Team will comprise independent fact check agencies empanelled by the state government for the purpose of identifying false information. The Analytics Team would use cutting edge technologies like data analytics and Artificial Intelligence to proactively monitor the information disorder ecosystem. The Capacity Team would conduct awareness campaigns for the public to become aware of the existence and impact of the information disorder ecosystem. Minister for IT/BT for the Government of Karnataka, Priyank Kharge posted about the development on X. He reiterated that the Government of Karnataka is serious about tackling misinformation, disinformation, malinformation & fake news.

The Editors Guild of India had however earlier filed a petition with the Bombay High Court stating that the power to determine what is or is not fake has been vested with the executive by means of this committee which they have stated is in violation of the IT rules in place in 2023. “Any such monitoring framework should follow principles of natural justice, including giving prior notice, right to appeal, and judicial oversight,” The Editors Guild of India stated.
