Karnataka government stresses legal adoption for child welfare

The state government has reaffirmed the importance of legal adoption as a means to provide stable family environments for orphaned, abandoned, and destitute children. By placing vulnerable children in nurturing homes, the initiative aims to safeguard their rights and ensure their overall well-being.

Children without parental support often face exploitation and abuse. Legal adoption shields them from such hardships, offering them a secure upbringing. To adopt, prospective parents must meet specific eligibility criteria and submit documents such as proof of age, residence, income, medical reports, and a marriage certificate if applicable. Registration on the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) portal is mandatory, followed by a home study report for ₹6,000. An additional ₹50,000 is required for legal formalities upon child allocation.

Eligible parents must not have life-threatening medical conditions or a criminal record. While both married and single individuals can adopt, single men cannot adopt a girl child. A married couple must have at least two years of stable marriage before applying.

The government has warned against unauthorized adoptions, emphasizing that abandoned children must be reported to authorities. Illegal adoption and child trafficking are punishable under the Juvenile Justice Act, with offenders facing imprisonment and heavy fines. Officials urge the public to support legal adoption, ensuring children grow up in safe and loving families.
