Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Wednesday that Bengaluru will see a significant expansion of its metro network, with 175 km of new lines expected to be operational by 2026.
Speaking at a press conference after inspecting the newly extended Nagasandra-Madavara metro line, Shivakumar outlined plans for phased development, promising 30 km of additional metro lines by 2025 and a total of 175 km by 2026.

Joined by MP Tejasvi Surya and MLAs Srinivasaiah and Muniraju, the Deputy CM traveled from Yeshwanthpur to Madavara to assess progress. He confirmed that the first two phases of the metro project are complete, with the Centre's approval secured for Phase 3. The state has allocated ₹1,130 crore for new train sets to support the expansion.
Shivakumar highlighted additional infrastructure plans, including a pedestrian skywalk at Manjunathanagar metro station and a collaborative pedestrian passage project with Indian Railways at Yeshwanthpur station. He also mentioned discussions with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to construct underpasses at Chikkabidarakallu and Madavara metro stations, and a park-and-ride facility at BEIC ground for commuters from Tumakuru.
The Nagasandra-Madavara extension, spanning 3 km, will open to the public on a trial basis this week, with a formal inauguration planned for a later date. Shivakumar praised Bengaluru’s high metro ridership, which he said underscores the metro's role in easing urban congestion and supporting the city's residents.
