The elephants, Junior Abhimanyu, Ranjan, Krishna, and Deva were ritually honored before being transferred, akin to a symbolic send-off for warriors heading into service. Another elephant, Mahendra, has also accompanied them for support but will return to Karnataka after the handover is complete.
This initiative, supported by Karnataka’s Forest Department, aims to help Andhra Pradesh manage increasing instances of human-animal conflict, especially in forested regions. The Kumki elephants, trained in locations like Dubare are skilled in helping forest officials safely capture and manage wild animals that wander into human habitats.
The event saw the participation of prominent figures including CM Siddaramaiah, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, Energy Minister K.J. George, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, Byrathi Suresh, Legal Advisor A.S. Ponnanna, and senior officials from both states.
Pawan Kalyan’s remarks:
Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan expressed deep gratitude towards the Karnataka government. He emphasized that this was more than just the transfer of elephants, it reflected a strong inter-state bond. He acknowledged the long-standing need in Andhra Pradesh, stating that this support fulfills a 20-year-old dream to reduce human-wildlife casualties. Kalyan assured Karnataka that the elephants will be well cared for and pledged personal responsibility for their well-being.
