The High Court has directed the state government to ensure the installation of audio announcement systems at major bus stands and points in every district and taluk within two years to support persons with disabilities (PwDs).

A division bench comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind emphasized that such systems must remain functional in BMTC and KSRTC buses.

Disposing of a PIL filed by N Shreyas, a visually impaired Bengalurean, the bench highlighted the need for continuous operation of loudspeaker systems at bus stops to assist PwDs in boarding and alighting. “Advanced technological equipment must be introduced, and adequate funds allocated for the scheme’s sustainability,” the court stated. Additionally, it recommended deploying staff at key locations to provide physical assistance.

Shreyas, founder of Shreyas Global Trust, highlighted in his petition the challenges faced by visually impaired commuters after KSRTC and BMTC discontinued audio announcements. BMTC informed the court that 5,694 of its 6,234 buses are equipped with voice systems, while 540 older buses lack the feature.

The court criticized the conduct of bus drivers and conductors, citing complaints of insensitivity toward PwDs. High Court urged authorities to uphold equality and social justice. It warned that withdrawing such facilities breaches statutory mandates and undermines the rights of differently abled persons.
