In a significant directive, the High Court has ordered that the ₹187 crore Valmiki Development Corporation scam be investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) rather than the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The decision came after a petition filed by Union Bank, which had sought a CBI probe, was dismissed. The court emphasized that an SIT investigation would be more suitable for the circumstances surrounding this high-profile case.
The Valmiki Development Corporation, an organization intended to serve underprivileged communities, particularly those from Scheduled Tribes, is accused of misappropriating funds. The funds, meant for welfare and development programs, allegedly found their way into the pockets of corrupt officials and external accomplices, sparking a public outcry and calls for accountability.
Union Bank’s petition argued that the CBI, as a central investigative body, was better equipped to handle the scope and scale of the scam. However, the High Court’s order clarifies that the SIT, which will include officers experienced in handling complex financial and corporate fraud cases, is fully capable of investigating the alleged corruption and ensuring that justice is served.
This ruling is expected to expedite the inquiry process and deliver transparency in a scandal that has sparked state and nationwide concern. The SIT is anticipated to begin its investigation immediately, under close judicial oversight.
