The Karnataka High Court has directed the State Legal Services Authority to carry out a detailed survey of 49 schools operated by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to assess the adequacy of student infrastructure. This move follows reports indicating that a lack of essential amenities may be contributing to student dropouts in these institutions.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind issued the directive during a hearing on a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) initiated by the court itself. The PIL was prompted by media coverage pointing to significant dropout rates in government-run schools, reportedly due to poor infrastructure.
The court instructed the Authority to form dedicated teams to inspect key facilities in each school. The teams are expected to assess the condition and availability of toilets, cleanliness, access to drinking water, and the overall hygiene and maintenance of school premises. The survey is intended to evaluate whether these schools provide a conducive environment for learning and student well-being.
The court's action highlights persistent issues regarding infrastructure in public education and the broader implications for student engagement and retention. The outcome of the survey is expected to inform necessary improvements and ensure that government schools meet the basic standards essential for effective education.
