The Karnataka government has announced its decision to increase fares for BMTC and KSRTC buses by 15-20% after the conclusion of the upcoming by-polls in Sandur, Shiggaon, and Channapatna. The move, which had been under consideration for some time, comes in response to mounting operational losses faced by the transport corporations due to rising diesel prices and escalating costs of spare parts. This will mark the first fare revision in four years.

Officials from the transport corporations have long pushed for a fare hike, citing unavoidable financial pressures. However, the government delayed the move, wary of placing an additional burden on passengers. “The hikes are inevitable,” an official stated, pointing to the corporations’ worsening financial health.
The fare hike comes as the state grapples with balancing public service costs and delivering on promises made during last year’s elections. After coming to power, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government rolled out several welfare schemes, including free bus travel for women—a measure that has significantly impacted revenue. In total, the government has earmarked Rs 58,000 crore for five major freebie schemes, further straining its finances.
While the fare increase may provide some relief to the cash-strapped transport sector, concerns remain about its impact on ordinary commuters who rely on affordable public transport for their daily needs.
