A 26-year-old IPS officer, Harsh Bardhan, tragically lost his life in a car accident in Karnataka due to a tyre burst and improper use of a seatbelt. The accident has brought attention to the condition and maintenance of police vehicles in Karnataka. The state police department has a fleet of 12,000 vehicles, half of which are jeeps. The maintenance of these vehicles is overseen by the City Armed Reserve in Bengaluru and the District Armed Reserve in other regions, led by officers of DCP rank.

Monthly funds are allocated for vehicle repairs and servicing. However, sources indicate that delays in fund disbursement often lead to vehicles being operated without proper maintenance. In urgent cases, officers reportedly pay for repairs out of pocket and later seek reimbursement.

Despite all vehicles being equipped with seatbelts and airbags, improper use remains a significant safety concern. The incident underscores the need for stricter adherence to safety protocols and more efficient maintenance practices to prevent such tragedies in the future.
