Karnataka's Minister for IT and Biotechnology, Priyank Kharge, is reportedly unable to lead the state’s delegation to the prestigious BIO International Convention 2025 in Boston due to a lack of required clearances from the central government.

The annual event is one of the world’s largest biotechnology summits, drawing participation from global pharma giants, biotech startups, and government representatives.
Sources within the state government confirmed that while the delegation’s participation had been planned months in advance, the necessary political clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for the minister’s travel has not been granted. This development could impact Karnataka’s visibility at the summit, where the state hoped to attract global investment into its growing biotech sector.
Officials expressed disappointment, stating that ministerial presence at such international forums lends credibility and helps strengthen investor confidence. The denial of clearance is being seen by some as politically motivated, given recent tensions between the state and the Centre over federal cooperation and funding.
In the absence of the minister, senior bureaucrats from the Department of IT & BT are expected to represent Karnataka at the Boston event.
