The Karnataka government has made it compulsory for all products manufactured within the state to display labels in Kannada, reinforcing the language’s role in business and industry. The directive, issued through a government circular on February 15, applies to both public and private sector manufacturers.

Officials have been instructed to enforce the rule under the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, which became effective on March 12, 2024. The Act seeks to promote Kannada in daily life, employment, and business while strengthening its presence in the market.

According to Section 17(7) of the Act, manufacturers selling products in Karnataka must ensure that product names and usage instructions are printed in Kannada, in addition to any other languages. Designated enforcement officers will oversee compliance with this regulation.

This decision comes amid ongoing debates about language policies in Karnataka. Recent discussions on job quotas for locals and the prominence of Kannada in government and corporate sectors have heightened conversations around linguistic identity.

The move aligns with the state’s broader efforts to integrate Kannada into all aspects of daily life. During Kannada Rajyotsava Day celebrations, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reiterated the government's commitment to promoting Kannada.

By mandating Kannada labels, the government aims to preserve the language’s cultural significance while fostering a business environment that prioritizes local identity.
