The Karnataka government is exploring the possibility of extending operational hours for pubs, microbreweries, and other commercial establishments in Bengaluru. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, addressing the Legislative Council recently, highlighted the need for longer business hours to accommodate the city's global workforce and late-night economic activities.

Bengaluru, known for its international business presence, currently enforces a closing time of 11:30 pm for pubs, with select liquor outlets permitted to operate until 1 am. However, the government is considering adjustments to these regulations after discussions with the Home and Excise Ministers.
Concerns over businesses operating beyond legal hours have also been raised. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member HS Gopinath emphasized the need for stricter enforcement, arguing that violations of existing rules have contributed to corruption. Meanwhile, Excise Minister RB Thimmapur reported that 11 cases had been filed against establishments breaching operational limits in the past three years.
The debate over business hours has been ongoing. In November 2023, restaurant owners in Bengaluru had sought approval from the city’s police commissioner to operate 24x7. While the government had granted permission for round-the-clock operations, several business owners claimed that nighttime restrictions were still being enforced by police authorities.
With discussions now gaining momentum at the government level, a potential shift in Bengaluru’s nightlife regulations could be on the horizon.
