Data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme indicates that the state has witnessed the highest number of such incidents since the pandemic. In 2023, Karnataka recorded 3.6 lakh dog bites and 42 rabies fatalities, pointing to an alarming trend. Officials attribute the rise to improved surveillance and the mandatory reporting of cases.

Among districts, Vijayapura reported the highest number of dog bites at 6,930, followed by BBMP areas (6,290) and Hassan (6,096). Bengaluru Urban alone saw 12,263 cases across its municipal and non-municipal regions. The lowest numbers were recorded in Chamarajanagar (790) and Yadgir (393). Bengaluru Urban accounted for half of the state’s rabies deaths with six fatalities, while Belagavi (3), Ballari (1), Dakshina Kannada (1), and Shivamogga (1) also reported cases.

Authorities emphasize that better documentation, especially through private healthcare providers, has contributed to the increased figures. Efforts are underway to curb dog bite incidents and ensure early intervention to prevent rabies fatalities.
