Karnataka has witnessed a disturbing number of child deaths, with 17,000 newborns and 21,000 stillbirths recorded in the past year, according to data from the state’s Health and Family Welfare Department. These shocking figures have raised serious concerns about maternal and child health in the state.

The Child Rights Commission has taken the issue seriously and has formed task forces to investigate the causes of these deaths. One of the primary factors identified is child marriage, which often leads to complications in childbirth and early pregnancies. Malnutrition, inadequate healthcare, and lack of proper prenatal care have also been linked to the high mortality rates.
In response, the commission plans to send a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging the government to take immediate action to address these issues. They are calling for stronger measures to prevent child marriages, improve nutritional support for mothers and children, and ensure better healthcare access, especially in rural areas.
The Child Rights Commission’s intervention highlights the urgent need for systemic changes to protect the health and well-being of mothers and children in Karnataka. Authorities are now under pressure to implement suitable remedies and improve healthcare infrastructure to prevent further tragedies.
