More than 5,000 government buses are slated to be introduced across Karnataka, and 2,000 of these 5000 buses are set to augment Bengaluru’s transportation network.

Since the initiation of the Shakti scheme in June, the state-operated buses, collectively managed by various transport corporations in Karnataka, have witnessed an impressive 80 crore footfalls.

Taking note of the escalating demand under the Shakti scheme, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has instructed the transport department to procure an extra 5,600 buses to fortify the state’s transport services. Notably, a substantial allocation of ₹500 crore has already been earmarked in the state budget for this purpose.

As indicated by a report in Money Control, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is scheduled to receive 2,221 of the new buses by March of the coming year. Significantly, more than 1,300 of these buses are anticipated to be electric, highlighting the state’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

Further emphasizing their commitment to enhancing public transportation in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government is formulating plans to increase the number of buses operating on the city’s roads.

Karnataka’s transport minister Ramalinga Reddy had previously revealed that an additional 2,000 buses are in the pipeline to bolster Bengaluru’s public transport system.
