The price range for onions last week was between Rs 30 to Rs 40

Currently it is hovering around Rs 80 to Rs 90

Lag in harvesting has been attributed as a major cause for the increase in prices

The price of onions in the state has witnessed a steep rise. The price range for onions last week was between Rs 30 to Rs 40. Currently it is hovering around Rs 80 to Rs 90. It is being reported that however only Rs 40 to Rs 50 of this amount is being received by the farmers producing it. This is proving to be insufficient for them for the purposes of repaying the loans they have borrowed in order to harvest the crops. Due to the moderate pricing of onions over a period of time, the farmers have not been able to make a substantial profit.

There has been widespread outrage at the middlemen extracting profit from this scenario. They have been earning Rs 40 per Kg on an average. Farmers have alleged that hoarding of onions is taking place by the middlemen.

In both Karnataka and Maharashtra, the produce is not able to match up to the demand of onions. Certain states have experienced a lag as far as the harvesting of the crops are concerned. This has been attributed as a major cause for the increase in prices. Even in markets that avoid the presence of middlemen, the price of onions is Rs 57.
