The Karnataka government is planning to establish a special anti-communal force within the state police to address rising instances of criminal and communal violence, especially in the coastal regions. Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara announced that the new unit will function similarly to the existing Anti-Naxal Force and will also focus on tackling moral policing, which has often led to communal tensions.

The move comes in the wake of a violent incident involving Suhas Shetty, a former Bajrang Dal member with a criminal background, who was brutally attacked on the outskirts of Mangaluru on May 1, 2025. A group of assailants intercepted Shetty’s car and attacked him with lethal weapons. He later succumbed to his injuries in a private hospital.
Shetty had five criminal cases against him and was known for his association with Hindutva groups, especially the Bajrang Dal, making him a controversial figure frequently in the political spotlight.
