In a rare display of political unity, both the Congress-led Karnataka government and the BJP-led Opposition have strongly condemned actor Kamal Haasan over his recent remark about the Kannada language. During a promotional event in Chennai, Haasan claimed that Kannada originated from Tamil, sparking widespread outrage in Karnataka.

The statement was met with sharp criticism from political leaders across party lines, who called it historically inaccurate and culturally insensitive. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and several cabinet members voiced their displeasure, emphasizing Kannada’s rich and independent linguistic heritage. The Opposition BJP also slammed Haasan, accusing him of repeatedly undermining Kannada and Karnataka's cultural identity.
The controversy has not remained limited to political circles. Pro-Kannada organisations, cultural activists, and citizens have expressed deep resentment, demanding that the actor issue a public apology or clarification. Many have interpreted Haasan’s comments as dismissive of Kannada’s historical significance and linguistic pride.
Several political leaders have also urged for a strong response from the state, including a possible boycott of the actor’s films in Karnataka, if no apology is issued. The growing backlash highlights the sensitivities around language and cultural identity in the region and the expectation that public figures speak responsibly on such matters.
